MAOU!!!!!!!!
23rd-Jul-2008 06:54 pm
嵐: 大野智: satoshi takes your life forever!
Okay. I’ve so wanted to do this after the first ep came out, but because of unavoidable circumstances, I’m latelatelate for this.

So.

On with the Maou squealage, episodes 1-3.

the devil.JPG

Disclaimer: This is not, by any means, a review.
Notes: I’ve never watched Mawang so I don't know what happens next. I do plan to watch it after Maou just so that I won't look at Maou through Mawang eyes and be all "Compared to Mawang..." when referring to Maou.

Episode 1

ohno's first appearance1.JPG
The first time I saw this, I had a premonition that Naruse is going to die. Is he? No, don't answer that. *sniff*

ohno's first appearance2.JPG
Okay. So in Ohno’s first appearance in his first serial drama, he is seen carrying flowers.
Somebody, everybody, SCREAM.

sensei's awkward smile.JPG
What’s with this awkward scene?

crazy stalker mode.JPG
Naruse in crazy stalker mode.

police brutality.JPG
Police brutality.

lemme grab ya.JPG
I am so gonna grab ya.

Let’s skip the shower scene. Everyone has remarked on that.

hell looks like an expensive place to stay at.JPG
So this is how hell is like. Looks expensive to me. And clean and organized. Like the devil himself.

naruse's red room of doom.JPG
Dundundundun. The red room of doom! –insert Psycho theme–
This somehow, makes me think of The Shining, because the kid kept on writing red rum on the walls, then mommy saw the words reflected on glass and read mur der! –insert shrieks!–

i'll be watching you.JPG
Every breath you take, every move you make, every vow you break, every step you take, I’ll be watching you.
Fic, people!

toma is hot.JPG
Gratuitous Tomaishot screencap.

amano makoto.JPG
Amano Makoto! That cracked me up! Made me think of Okita Souji dancing to Rain! XXDD WHAT.
The explanatory flashback that Naruse has a little later in the episode, with him standing in the rain watching Naoto and Eisaku and Kumada had me rolling my eyes.

the real stalker.JPG
This guy is an Arashi stalker! First Hanadan, then Yamataro, then Maou!!!

heaven and hell.JPG
I find this interesting. Ryou is standing in front of the stairs going up [and under the light] and Naoto is under an arrow sign going down [and in darkness]. Can be interpreted in various ways, but I read this as Ryou in the light because he “sees everything, knows the plan” and Naoto in the dark because, well, he’s in the dark about what is happening and what will happen. He’s the only one who sees this “chance” meeting as that.

rewind-replay-hajimemashite.JPG
I kept on replaying this, the Hajimemashite scene. Ryou clearly knows who Naoto is, been stalking him all this time, but he shows no telltale signs of this.
Ryou looks so fucking controlled. He’s got more than ten years of rage bottled up; of course he's careful not to ruin The Plan.

the transformation.JPG
With all the meaningful stares and smiles Ryou has peppered episodes 1 to 3 with, the slow transformation of his face here, from one registering courteousness to one showing hostility is the scariest of them all for me.

obb.JPG
The opening credit sequence is very good. Some skillful editing there, specially the synchronized audio theme and visuals when Ryou and Naoto face each other and a circle of fire surrounds them, meanwhile the song rises and fades into falsetto.

so pretty.JPG
There’s something mystical about her. She looks like your regular nice, pretty Japanese girl when she laughs and smiles. But like this, she’s someone mysterious, unearthly.
But really, I find the kzztkzzt sound effects and the erratic camera treatment when showing her “powers” very annoying.

ihaveacrushonyousweetypie.JPG
She has a crush on him already. *facepalms*

soulless eyes.JPG
I am wondering, from the perspective of an Arashi and Ohno Satoshi fangirl, just where he got this expression from. The word evil doesn’t seem to apply to this expression, particularly not to those eyes. Those eyes reflect nothing but soullessness. *shriek*

shiranaionichan.JPG
I was thinking if it was a mistake, focusing on this stranger for a few counts too long. Of course, by the second and third episodes, this identity of this person is slowly revealed.

unreleased tears.JPG
Ah, I love this crying scene, I do, I do. And how his tears spring out but don’t fall, and the lilting sounds are cut off when he snaps the music box shut, plunging the room in silence and the violent sounds from the heavy rains outside come rushing in to uproot the stillness. Nice.

walking in the rain.JPG
Amano Makoto, as he walks to justice.
I’m walking in the rain, just walking in the rain...
Teehee.
I was thinking that he's some hotshot lawyer, wouldn't he like, be driving some nice car [Never mind that the actor doesn't have a freaking license]? Could it be that we don't see it because he just leaves it somewhere far because he doesn’t like parking illegally? Or maybe, yeah, he doesn’t drive and has something against driving?
But yeah, well, they addressed this driving issue in the third episode. Good.
His shoes are kinda noisy, too. Always making creepy sounds on the floor. Are those specially made ones? Where does he get those?

another gratuitous tomaishot cap.JPG
Another gratuitous Tomaissohot screencap.

aha! so this is where the calm down thing comes from.JPG
Aha! So this is where the calm down line he kept throwing at Toma in TFPII came from!

aha! so this is where the calm down thing comes from1.JPG
Everyone in this scene is leaning forward [even the guy behind Naruse], and doing something. Everyone except Naruse who is leaning back and observing his handiwork.

toma yells at leader.JPG
Here, before Naruse looks up after Serizawa accuses him of not understanding what it’s like to have a loved one die, Naruse swallows almost imperceptibly. As if trying to control himself from lashing back, from making accusations of his own.
Beautiful.

beautiful scene.JPG
Exquisite.
Is this Naruse idealizing his memories of his brother?

i wanna be a lawyer.JPG
And Hideo says he wants to become a lawyer, thus revealing one of the crucial reasons why Ryou became one. And no, I don’t suppose wearing a suit all the time is one of these chief reasons.

maou2.JPG
Maou 2, starring Ninomiya Kazunari as Kumada Masayoshi. Plot: He becomes a judge to avenge his father’s death. His adversary is Ohno Satoshi as Naruse Ryou.
Yay!

lips.JPG
Yeah. *licks screen*
If I capped all scenes highlighting his body parts, I'd be capping almost everything. XD

whyishehappytodie.JPG
Hideo looks happy.
O_o o_O

the cold eyes of justice.JPG
looking inside the self.JPG
Funny how in this scene, Ryou’s eyes are the steady, observant, cold eyes of justice while Naoto’s are agitated, unfocused, feverish eyes of guilt.
They share a very painful past, but whereas one wants to rewrite it, one wants to escape it.
I like Toma’s acting best here, in all the three episodes.

it ends here.JPG
And it ends here, with Ryou wrapped in his pain and guilt and anger. Isn’t it funny how here, where he doesn’t utter a word, is where he seemingly screams the loudest, with the stain of his vengeance engulfing him?
Yes. This is me waxing lyrical.

Episode 2

is this supposed to be nino.JPG
Is this guy supposed to be Nino as Masayoshi? Hmmm… Fic idea…

wtf you again.JPG
WTF. YOU AGAIN?
You stalker you.

everybreathyoutake.JPG
Altogether now! Every breath you take, every move you make, every vow you break, every step you take, I’ll be watching you.
For the nth time, fic, people!

didntyourparentsteachyouanybetter.JPG
Oh, Sora! Didn’t your parents teach you any better?

KUMA!!.JPG
Kuma! So this is what happened to you after high school! Where’s Shin?

umai.JPG
Umai.
XD

threesome.JPG
Threesome! XD
Tarot cards. A girl and two boys. All the hymnal bgms. I keep expecting Escaflowne to appear. Haha. Okay, between the boys, who gets the long hair and sword and who gets the wings and the girl?

what. you're the one stalking me this time.JPG
WHAT. You’re the one doing the stalking this time, Naoto.
It’s not my fault anymore, it’s your fault anymore.
XXDD

why'dhehavetogo.JPG
Shiori: Now look what you’ve done! Just when things were getting better, too.
Naoto: Why’d he go? Is it because I’m still wearing the same clothes since the first episode?
Shiori is starting to grow on me. Like a wart.

whatretheydoinginthere.JPG
What are they doing in there? I wanna join!

lookatmeimevol.JPG
You're looking hot, you devil you.
Ohno Satoshi is LOVE!
And Naruse Ryou, the opposite of love, is evol!
Right.

On to the next episode!

Episode 3

narusedriving.JPG
Finally, we see Naruse driving.
See? He lives alone and has a car. So not Ohno.

nightcap.JPG
Wanna fuck? I mean, um, wanna come upstairs and fuck? Um, no I mean, wanna have coffee then come upstairs and fuck?
Wanna have coffee?

And she looks disappointed too, when he said no, it’s late.
And OMG, their love theme is Over the Rainbow! How gay.
ARASHI! WHERE CAN I RUN FROM YOU?! <--A funny question considering the theme and protagonist for this drama.

i like him.JPG
I like him. He’s the perfect foil for Naoto’s impulsive nature. And he doesn’t scream to be forceful, too.

tormented cat.JPG
His version of an emo!guy tormented man, like in episode 1, is that of a cat screeching and arching its back.
He and Ryou should fuck already, to put his shrieking into good use.
I’m obsessed with people fucking. What the.

foodinthebag.JPG
A realization: For an Asian drama, no one seems to be eating. Except for this where Takatsuka gives Serizawa some food. And it’s in a plastic bag. Is this a premonition of all the bodies we’ll end up seeing in bags? *gasps*
So yeah, eating as an emphasis on life, is not something we might be seeing much in this series.

food.JPG
This cake from episode 1, the only food item I’ve seen so far, is a symbol of that time when Naruse still felt alive, when his brother and mother were still around.

EDIT: There is another food item shown in this series! Mari served cakes to both Noriyoshi and Hitoshi at the office just before Souda Mitsuru arrived.
food!
Hm. Three. Arranged in a triangle. Is she trying to say something?
Something like "how else can I arrange the plates in this small tray, moron!"?

remorse.JPG
What is this? Guilt? Is Naruse Ryou remorseful?
This is so not you, Naruse.
For the first time, he seems unsure of himself. Interesting.
What I assume as Naruse’s guilt/remorse here seems to stem from the realization that the people he’s using, though they may not be innocent, may get so fucking hurt, may be stained by the color of his vengeance.

itsallaboutwhoyouknow.JPG
Previously, we see Nakanishi removing Serizawa from the investigation because the victim is Serizawa’s friend. As officers, they should not let anything color their judgment. But what is Nakanishi doing here upon learning that Shiori got a Tarot card from Amano Makoto?
Well. They’ve sworn to protect and defend people, plus, Shiori is an asset.
And it’s harder to be impartial when the ones threatened are those you know.

Obligatory tomaissohot cap.JPG
Obligatory Tomaissohot cap.

hiddenselves.JPG
Everyone has a hidden side.

deception.JPG
We all have hidden selves.
This is Ryou telling Naoto, “Look, I’m shitting clues all over your face and you still don’t fucking get it. Watch me gloat.”
IDK. Is it just me, or has anyone else noticed that there’s something about Satoshi’s face, an element, that can’t be captured by screen caps? I mean, when I try to get some stills from his videos, it looks like something has been lost.
Or maybe it, whatever it is, doesn’t want to be confined.
Or maybe this drama has warped my brain.
Or maybe I’m just really warped. Why blame this series?

ohnosatoshiislove.JPG
OHNOSATOSHIISLOVE!!!
The temperature here is around 42 degrees Celsius and the humidity is something I’ve never encountered before. The airconditioning units are all working efficiently yet, at this point, my nose has started to bleed. Literally.
This is my body saying the heat got to me. Yeah. My body loves stating the obvious. *eyeroll*

bloody instrument one.JPG
bloody instrument two.JPG
Both scenes remind me of Neil Gaiman’s Murder Mysteries when Raguel tells God, “I feel dirty. I feel tarnished. I feel befouled. Perhaps it is true that all that happens is in accordance with Your will, and thus it is good. But sometimes You leave blood on Your instruments.”

shioriisthatyou.JPG
Shiori looked prettier and older as a child. Why is that?

looking in.JPG
Both Shiori and Naoto are looking inside themselves, unaware that they are seeing their versions of the  same scene from a shared memory.

zoom out1.JPG
zoom out2.JPG
zoom out3.JPG
Master of all I survey.
This is Naruse, the all-seeing devil.

Good that no one dies in this episode [Technically, Yosuke's death happened in the second episode because he was "killed" there]. I would hate to have a person die for each one. But with Naruse in a cemetery at the end of this chapter, heads will probably roll in the succeeding ones.

WHERE'S EPISODE 4???????!!!!!!!!!

Questions

what's in the bag.JPG
whatsinthebag.JPG
Why does she always have her bag with her when she’s running with Serizawa?

aniki is the nervous sort, isnthe.JPG
Aniki is the nervous sort, isn’t he?

More questions

  • Why now? Why did Naruse choose to act now? Because his plan is already in place, is that it?
  • Can someone explain how Shiori’s powers work? In some scenes she can see the last memory of the object, but in the empress card one, she saw the memory of Hideo’s death. And when she touched the lily, she saw Naruse's memory. But in the investigations, she saw the memory residues of the object—like in the moon card, even though Naruse was the last one who touched it. Or does she read the strongest residual memory from objects?

Wishlist
  • I wish they'd tone down the angelic lawyer lines/evil glares of doom already. I know, I know, this is television and relevant points need to be reiterated but please ease up on the devil angle, all right? We already fucking get it.  The Naruse evil glares of doom have been explored from all fucking sides already, it's getting annoying. Plus, it's scarier when Naruse smiles, anyway. I just hope they don't overdo the smiles, too.
  • I wish they'd tone down the lipgloss. Distracting. I mean, just when I'm getting scared silly, they zero in on Naruse's shiny lips, which ends up with me kissing my laptop screen! See? Distracting.
  • I wish Ryou and Naoto would fuck already. Or Shiori and Ryou, I’ve nothing against het sex. But the three of them would be better. The more, the many-er. Yay!
  • Where are the fics, dammit!

Babbling

Ohno: I’ve never had doubts that he can do justice to his role. We’ve all had glimpses of the bundle of surprises that is Ohno Satoshi. Yeah yeah, we've seen some of his acting, from the movies, clips of his stageplays, Yonbun no Ichi no Kizuna, Tensei Kunpu. Although in almost all of them, he seems like himself, another Ohno Satoshi, they’ve made me see that the man can act. Now, in that Engimono one, Katte ni Nostalgia, he’s different there, and THAT convinced me he can do this. As for him being convincing as a dashing lawyer, we’ve seen him dance, we’ve seen the looks of intensity. As for his height, that is something we can’t do anything about.

Still, seeing him here is such a surprise. And omg, he's in a fucking suit! But is it me or he's been wearing the same suit forever, except for his inner shirt and tie?

There were some very tiny eh? bits from Ohno’s acting in episode 1 but those are forgivable. Biased, am I? Of couse I am. Everything is based on our biases, on our own perception of the world; this drama specifically points that out, how relative truth can be skewed based on judgment.

The best part of it is, he is not Ohno Satoshi here. If you put on Johnny’s shiny costumes on the tiny lawyer, he won't turn into Ohno Satoshi.

Because here, he is Naruse Ryou.

His acting here is so effective to me that although Ohno has been inside a church in both episodes 1 and 2, it took this scene before it occurred to me, “OMG. Ohno. In a suit. In church. I’ve got to run and get my gown! And the priest!!”
ohno in church.JPG
Who needs flowers and guests when you’ve got Ohno for your groom?

Of course your friends will understand!

Ikuta: Toma seems to be from the Matsumoto Jun school of over the top acting, but whereas it works for Jun because he has started to master being a ham [like Al Pacino], Toma can still be a bit off sometimes, and still be lovable. I have yet to see Serizawa Naoto in this drama, though.

Kobayashi: She’s so charming and we see her blossom as the series progresses. I especially love how her eyes light up when Shiori sees Naruse. Like she’s asking, Why aren’t we in bed yet? XD

Well she's young, she probably really thinks that a bed is necessary. Eherm.

More Babbling

A gentleman will walk but never run: First thing I noticed was that while Ryou was always moving so slowly, so precisely, Naoto was fast, always running. And Ryou is always speaking so gently, whereas Naoto screams almost all the time. This reminded me that Ryou had more than a decade to plan things out so his movements are all focused, and very very cautious.

This is best seen here:
best seen at.JPG
In this scene, Ryou is very still, while Naoto is so agitated he needs to be restrained.
This makes me think of bondage fics.
I don’t know, either.

Wanna buy watch, Joe?: Ah, I love how Naruse looks at his watch in such a slow, deliberate manner. Everything is planned, calculated.

I love how Naruse swallows whenever there seems to be a glitch, like when Shiori asks him if they've met before, when Shiori asks Sora about the shiranai oniichan. And how, when, in episode 1, Naoto screams at him that he doesn’t know how it is to lose someone, we see his throat working, like he is swallowing up all the words about to rush out of his mouth, all the words that would have dropped his emotional baggages at Naoto's door.

Naruse turning the tables on Serizawa Naoto:
  • Naruse making Naoto powerless to save Kumada and Yosuke, like Ryou was powerless to save his brother, making Naoto guilty of killing both as Ryou feels guilty of being unable to save his brother
  • Naruse using the self-defense argument, the same defense Kumada’s lawyer used to defend Naoto, to defend the persons who killed the people around Naoto
  • Naruse making sure that people around Naoto dies, like everyone in Naruse’s family did
I like Nakanishi because he seems to be the least judging of all the characters, so far. Admirable acting there by Miyake Yuji.

I like Serizawa daddy because he is a brutally honest man. And I’d like to think whatever his thoughts on his prodigal son are, he loves him and wants to save him. He’s a powerful man, he could just force Naoto to do what he wills, but he doesn’t do that. And I doubt if it ever occurred to him to ask if his son is indeed guilty or not of killing Hideo. All that mattered to him was to save his son. Or at least, that’s what I’d like to think.

My thoughts On Naoto: He sure is self-righteous. His struggle to atone for his sins has made him a pretentious bastard who is ready to point at people and blame them. The whole gray area of whether Hideo’s death was his fault has left him so tormented he wants nothing to do with gray areas anymore. A simple dichotomy of good and evil is enough for him. And this could be because of projection, too. The guilt he accuses people of is his own. He keeps on saying he’ll catch someone, he’ll definitely catch whoever, because he himself was never caught. And now his conscience is catching up with him.

My thoughts on Naruse: Naruse is self-righteous, too, he has made up his mind that the people who were involved in his brother’s death are guilty and that’s the whole truth. It's the only truth he'll accept. He keeps on saying that the Truth cannot be distorted, and yet he deceives people to "undistort" it. What a hypocrite. His rage and need for vengeance have blinded him to his own contradictions.

Naruse Ryou and Serizawa Naoto: Their current selves are both the results of their reactions to Hideo’s death, the subsequent court case and the verdict, and now they are looking at each other from the opposite sides of the street. Naoto wants to erase his past  so he tries to escape it and becomes a policeman. Naoto’s idea of justice is chasing after the bad guys. Ryou wants to erase his past so he tries to rewrite it and becomes a lawyer because that was what his brother wanted to be and because he wants to avenge his family’s death. As a lawyer, he saves the weak, helps the disenfranchised, and clears the names of the innocent. Or does he?

Regardless of how he sees his role as a lawyer, in my eyes, this is what he believes in: Justice is the truth that wins.

Naruse or Naoto?

The lesser evil?

Is still evil.

Babbling Myself to Death

I find stories with religious symbology fascinating, especially those of the Christian persuasion, particularly those heavy with Catholic icons. Although this dorama is not putting a lot of weight on the religion angle apart from the Church thing, I love the parallelism of the fallen angel/devil and the evolution of Naruse’s character.

In the beginning of the first episode, Shiori tells the story of Lucifer and Satan: Lucifer was a cheerful, beautiful  archangel who was loved by everyone. But Lucifer displeased God,  was banished from heaven, became Satan and went to Hell. She tells this while Naruse is shown looking all kind and gentlemanly, with flowers. After a flashback explains the reasons for the flowers [and Naruse's seeming grief and bitterness] Naruse was seen with a malevolent look on his face. Then, a picture of the devil in Shiori's story is superimposed on Naruse's.

Digression: Some of us were taught that Lucifer was Satan when he was still an archangel, however, not everyone thinks so. There are differing beliefs on whether Lucifer and Satan are the same, and if Lucifer really was an angel, although according to the Book of Enoch, Satan was an archangel, and in the Book of Isaiah, Lucifer was a term given to a Babylonian king who "fell from the grace of God". Some seem to have read 2 Cor 11:14b "For Satan himself masquerades as an Angel of Light" as a sign that Satan and Lucifer are the same. IDK.

So anyway, in Shiori's story, Lucifer became The Devil as a consequence of "God's displeasure" or because Lucifer fell from the grace of God. But, why, what did Lucifer do? In religious literature, there are different contradictory reasons, but one of the most popular is that Lucifer rebelled against God when he said in his heart, [Book of Isaiah] "I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God." Some people argue that this passage was addressed to a king of Babylon, not necessarily an angel, but I digress. In Jewish belief, Lucifer became Satan because he wanted "to make his throne higher than the clouds over the earth and resemble 'My power on high.'" Anyway, in the Catholic stories I was fed with as a child, Lucifer fell from the grace of God because Lucifer wanted to equal/surpass God and led a rebellion to achieve this end.

So let's go back to the parallelism. In this story, Naruse Ryou is an angelic lawyer. With all the light used for Naruse in this dorama, one can't help but think of Naruse as Lucifer, the light bringer. This also makes me applaud every time light is used to represent Naruse's thoughts, like a thought balloon with a light bulb.

So why did Naruse Ryou [as Lucifer] "fall from God's Grace?" As I see it, he “fell from God's grace” because he wanted to be God-like—he passed judgment [a God-like role] on people related to his brother's death, deciding that all of them are guilty of Hideo's "murder". And, having judged that people will choose to harm or kill given the right provocation, Naruse used and is using other people as his instruments in his plans for vengeance. Clearly, our Naruse is not a fan of the belief that humans are inherently good.

In one of my most favorite stories, Neil Gaiman’s Murder Mysteries, it was implied that Lucifer fell from grace because Lucifer led a rebellion against God as a reaction against God’s injustice. In this same vein, Naruse Ryou reacts against injustice and his actions to “rebel” has caused him to fall from grace.

And now this is the fun part. I love how, as The Devil, Naruse as Amano Makoto doesn’t just fucking kill them all. Why the convoluted plan, all the sneaky signs, the planted articles leading to the "accidental” deaths?

Because The Devil is not the Angel of Death, The Devil is not The Vengeance of the Lord; The Devil is the one who provokes, the one who presents temptation, The Seducer. In Marlowe’s Doctor Faustus [I haven’t read Goethe’s Faust], The Devil, in true Biblical fashion, did not tell Faustus what to do, but presented him with choices. Similarly, his instruments Hayashi and Shintani were just given weapons; Naruse did not guide their hands to kill. And given the circumstances (Circumstances that Naruse did not create on his own [the Kumada/Hayashi and Ishimoto/Shintani stories were already written, they were things he did not make], but rather, he enhanced), all the people involved decided to act the way they did. Hayashi decided to confront Kumada, Kumada decided to use the knife. That Kumada died is an “accident”. Shintani decided that Yosuke kidnapped her child; she decided to rush to Yosuke's and threaten him with tear gas, Yosuke decided to wrestle with her. And again, that Yosuke died is an “accident”. -insert Naruse's creepy smile-

And this is what happens to his victims so far [they were provoked, they grabbed the murder weapon, and “accidentally” died] and his instruments [they were provoked, came charging in with the intent to harm, and “accidentally” killed].

So is Naruse a murderer?

He did not kill anyone. He did not order anyone killed. Although he did plan to kill his enemies, the final choice wasn't up to him, the results were all left to chance. He did incite his instruments to such heights of anger and desperation that they would want to kill, he did supply them with deadly weapons, he did plan all these maliciously. But then again, he did not tell them to kill, did not guide their hands to do harm.

Should he be accused of murder? Should he be deemed guilty?

What is he really guilty of apart from passing judgment on the people around him, on the people he used? What is his sin apart from not having faith in human nature? Is he guilty of manipulating circumstances, of using history, of using what he knows, to his advantage?

Is he, then, guilty of knowledge?

Oh, rhetoric.

Did Naruse really make a fool proof plan? What would he have done if his instruments opted to do something else?

AND.

Naruse is always using the ironic “self-defense” argument to torment Naoto. He is twisting the truth as the truth was twisted before when Naoto was set free. Or so he thinks.

But he defends his clients, knowing that he provoked them. Could he be thinking that maybe Naoto was also provoked? Could Naruse be contemplating that maybe Naoto was not necessarily at fault but under the circumstances, a life was taken, and so, he needs to avenge his brother’s death?

Or could he be thinking that accidents only happen when people refuse to take responsibility for their actions?

Could Naruse be thinking that, like Naoto, his instruments are also guilty?

Hm.

With Amano Makoto sending the Tarot cards to Naoto, is he trying to make the younger man responsible for  the deaths if he failed to read the signs that Amano has so cleverly spread everywhere? Is Makoto making Naoto guilty of knowledge?

Is Amano Makoto out to torment Naoto with the Tarot cards, or does he just want to be caught? Because deep inside he thinks he is wrong?

Hm again.

Does Naruse really think there is just One Truth? Does he really think the Truth cannot be distorted? Or does he think there are many, but one emerges as the Absolute Truth when one wins in the struggle for power and becomes the only accepted one?

And in this revolution of the many truths is he determined to make the truth he knows win?

Hm another.

In his cases, it superficially seems like the evil ones are killed by the good ones. Does Naruse see himself as the good one who will kill Serizawa, the bad one?

Somehow, I don’t see it as a simple division of good and evil, good and evil are not necessarily exclusive.. And people are not paper cut outs that can just be labeled as one or the other.

What is apparent to me is that, in Naruse's plan, the relatively powerful die at the hands of the relatively powerless.

So is this Naruse’s revenge, this reversal of power?

Hm. Hm. Hm. And hmhmhm some more.

In the parallelism between Lucifer/Devil and Naruse Ryou/Amano Makoto, one thing baffles me. Although Ryou did “rebel” and became The Devil, there seems to be something missing.

Lucifer did not become The Devil because he rebelled, he became The Devil because he fell from the grace of God [because if God forgave Lucifer, there would have been a different ending, yes?]

In Naruse’s case, whose grace did he fall from? His brother’s, his sense of justice’s, his own?

Who/what is Naruse's God?

I don’t know either.

EDIT: Naruse's God is the Truth.

I'll expound on this later.

I don't have a Maou icon! *horrified*

I have a confession to make ... I have managed to watch them all now... Unsubbed. My poor language skills allow me to understand 65 to maybe 75 % of what's going on, the setting, lighting, script and acting allow me to understand a little more maybe up to 85 to 90%.

and and this is a post made of awesome and needs to be cogitated and contemplated upon... and you will never hear the end of it from me!

I think I can safely declare my serious love for you now!

This post is meomories-ed so I can answer and talk about it bit by bit because there is just so much of it.

SERIOUS LOVE!!!! Datwe me already!!! ^_~ ... or at least coffee when you're in town the next time!

uhmmm ... yes goes to read bits of it some more...

damn I have no Maou icons either!!!

Have I said how seriously love this is!

Zan! &heart;

It's been a while. *hugs*

I have a confession to make ... I have managed to watch them all now...
Seriously, when I was writing my first draft for this monstrous entry, I was thinking that you won't be able to read this for a long time because you'd be waiting for the DVD release. I'm so happy you decided to watch earlier!

This post is meomories-ed so I can answer and talk about it bit by bit because there is just so much of it.
And I'm glad you liked this entry despite the length. This IS an overly long post, isn't it? A real TL;DR. You're a patient one, you are. I just couldn't stop myself from capping and commenting on everything. And having seen the aired episodes, wheels in my head just wouldn't stop turning. I can't stop thinking about what Naruse possibly thinks of his "instruments," if he sees them as guilty or not, of his opinion on the whole self-defense argument in general.
By all means, let's discuss Maou or this post if you want. I'm in dire need of a Maou discussion partner. XD

or at least coffee when you're in town the next time!
I'll take you up on that! If and when I visit Singapore again, I'll definitely contact you so that we can have coffee and chat. Or have some tea and chat. Tea is good, too. :)

What do YOU think of Maou?
24th-Jul-2008 08:38 am (UTC)
Tea is great ... I'm more a Tea person , ie for enjoyment and relaxation, than coffee which is an aid to getting me through the day. Both essential but for different reasons.

I LOVE Maou ...and that is to say even with the bias, I csn say that without conscience.

I have to apologise to say where your post was orderly and tidy this reply/comment will be here, there, everywhere and nowhere most likely. ^__^

So ..

1)I like your observation about his lip-balmed lips being a distraction because it is ... i'm thinking killer/murderer/evil planner and then I kind of zoom in on those lips and I am undone... in an "I want to kiss the screen right nao!" kind of way.

2)I bought myself a Tarot deck. I am trying to educate myself with Faust, but not sure which is the way to go ... Marlowe or Goethe? Being the Philistine that I am and knowing neither. Although Faust was said to be an Alchemist (a man after my own scientific heart) I have no true indepth knowledge of the histories behind the man or the quotes.

I suppose if nothing else Maou has made me go out to learn about stuff.

3) Hmmm as to character deaths ... *bitesnails* I'm thinking along the same lines as you but I'm figuring that there might yet be some plot twist. That will save them both.

I didn't just scream at the flowers I damn well near hyperventilated everytime Naruse was on screen. So controlled, so measured, so precise. but I too noticed the almost imperceptible swallowing of everytime, his conscience should have been pricked, everytime he felt that he could give in to tell Naoto to come off his high horse. ...and then I'd notice his lips too. *head desk!*

4) I love Naoto's boss too! He's lovely

5) The thing about the handbags ... could be a Japanese/Oriental/Asian thing. Sorry we don't go ANYWHERE without our handbags. There could be a fire in the building ...and we'll grab our bags first before leaving! ^__^ ... because everything we might need is in there!

Speaking of Naoto's partner, I love her hair! I think she's great too in general!

I think Naoto's boss, his partner and the other cop person are the only ones that are 'guilt free' in the story.

And yes that brings me to think that after ep. 3 that Shiori was somehow drawn in into the guilt as well.

Consider the look Naruse gives her as he closes Faust, when he see's her in the library. It isn't an "I wanna screw you look" maybe an "I wanna screw WITH you look" more than the former.

6) I wasn't aware that the ARASHI stalker was in HYD as well having never subjected myself to it. ^_~ Much like the girl who plays Taiyou sensei's colleague in Yoi no Mikata, goes to play Shougo Ban's girlfriend in Bambino and then goes to play teacher to Mimura and Yamada, I almost half expected here to be on this as a victim or something too!

7) Kumada Jr. - I am surprised he 'wasn't' at the funeral, like obviously. and I WAS as yourself looking at profiles at people up front as to which could be our dear Nino ... because he HAD to have been there after all!

And that scene was INTENSE. Well actually more on Nino's part. He looked like he wanted to do Ohno there and then but I think Nino/Kumada Jr... after searching the dead eyes, saw that it was not Oh-chan he had pushed up against the wall realised his mistake and left him at that. Kudos to Ohno there for total control over everything he has with every fibre of his being. But that could just be me reading too much into things as I usually do.

Does one think he might appear again??? Who knows. Fangirl in me hopes so too.

8) Shoes AND car...Yeah I was wondering how they were going to do that. One wonders if he hadn't got his license specially before filming of this...and I want those awesome shoes of pronouncing doom I tell you. Really although I think they have to tone that down a little other wise I will just laugh the next time I hear it anymore.

Hee!

9) Screencap post-shower ...Ooohhh that ASSSS! 'nuff said!
*giggles uncontrollably* - I wants to touch it oohh so badly. I know exactly how Nino feels you know. That butt is just MADE for touching!

on that note I have to end it here. I have a boy to pick up from school ... but be afraid ...be very afraid ...cause' I ain't done yet ...hee! *rubs hands in glee!*

Coffee!! I used to be a coffee-addict; now, not so much. I used to drink tea a lot too, although I've never been knowledgeable about it, just drank what was given to me. Now, I'm more of a kiwi juice person. Yeah, I don't know either.

Maou! *squeeing like a mad thing* Like Oh-chan with his Nino fishing, I'll never get enough of this drama!

1. Lip balm: What kind of cunning manipulator/murderer/whatever would care to gloss his lips with lip balm before giving off the evil glare of vengeance? It's like Naruse's all: Before I proceed with my evil plans, I make sure that I have glossy kissable lips! *smacks lips together*
How will people care about the body count when all we want to do is twine tongues with the supposed murderer? Yes, Japan, what's your answer to that?

2. What I know of Tarot I got from anime, particularly Escaflowne. Teehee. As for Faust, I haven't read Goethe's version of it yet, it's one of those pieces of literature that I always think of reading but fail to. If you are interested to read about Faust however, it would be safe to say that you should go with the medium you like best. If you're into Elizabethan plays, Doctor Faustus is definitely for you. It's well-written and I'd even go on to say that I found Doctor Faustus better than a lot of Shakespeare's plays.

3. A plot that will save both Naruse and Naoto? You're more optimistic than I am. I am anticipating a Face/Off kind of confrontation between the two lead characters. And they die. Or one does.

The first time I saw Ryou in his red room of doom, I thought, What a psycho! Then my phone rang. And my ring tone is still that pururupururu shimpurushimpuru jingle!

4. If a little more of Nakanishi's character is revealed in the remaining episodes of this drama, he just might become my second favorite!

5. The bag thing: I am aware of how an Asian woman treats her bag as an extra appendage, but somehow, I thought this does not apply to women in the force. This goes to show what I get for thinking--nothing. XD

Takatsuka's hair seems to be from a Za advertisement. Hell, she looks like a walking Za advertisement! So pretty!

Guilt: It's interesting how a drama using Catholic myths and icons is using guilt not from an external social/religious realization [God is watching, someone else knows I've hurt someone, another person thinks I did something wrong and all that jazz], but from an internal cognitive/emotional one [I realized that I've hurt someone].

6. Oh yeah, I remember that girl Arashi stalker you're referring to. She should've been here, too so that she can play as boy Arashi stalker's partner. Haha!

7. I've been wanting to write another Maou fic after seeing these first three episodes! The stories are playing in my head for 3 days now; Every time I wake up, scenes are unfolding in my mind's eye. Disconcerting.

Hm. I hope Nino comes back to guest again. And the other three. That would be fun, too, in a dark comedic way, if they all become victims! Yeah!

8. Um, I'm not sure about Japanese rules but one doesn't need a license to film a driving scene. Unless the drive is extensive and requires stunts. But as far as I know, Ohno can drive. He just doesn't have a license.

Those shoes! The evil shoes of doom! *gasp* They're like the shoes babies wear, the kind that gives off light and funny squishy sounds!

9. *giggles with you*

So you ain't done yet, eh?

Bring it on. I'll be waiting. [inserts bgm: Maou end theme]

*cackles*

Just a quickie thing before I get dinner .. and chucked off hubby's comp. ^_~

Aniki hmmm methinks he could be Sora's dad. Going down the guilt thing again he definitely knows her mom when he encounters her in the corridor, and he definitely looks guilty about something.

So it will be like some kind of come uppance to Aniki if his fiance/wife is screwing around with Kasai-kun.

And speaking of Sora ... seriously woman ... you sit where you can keep your eyes on the child AT ALL TIMES!!!! You know they do that here too ... Me - I'm paranoid I'm in there in the playground with them! The playground IS NOT A BABYSITTER!!!

Ok I know Singapore is still pretty safe, but they can fall or something you know get stuck or whatever. I don't know how safe it is in Japan. I think still relatively safe too but still knife crime there has gone up!

Hmm the suit thing ... well here guys really only ever have one or two ,,,one for special occasions and one for work. Too expensive to have more. Think of the dry cleaning bills. They are just very careful with the suits but have more trousers to go with the jacket. SO it does kinda look like the same one. Especially if you have made to measure ones. One jacket several trousers. (it's what hubby does and I know several of his friends do this too!) Well unless you're really super rich then you can have a suit for every occasion. But then again once they're out of office they tend to forego the jacket. Usually leaving it hung up at work.

But shirts damn ... a man likes to have as many shirts as a woman might like shoes. Even if they;re all the same colour, cut and style! @_@ Because they know what works for them. Hee!

Ok gotta go get dinner!

^__^

Every Toma shot is obligatory?! Lolz.

Did you notice how DETECTIVE Takazuka always runs around with her bag, IN HEELS?!

What's your take on the black butterly at the end of the opening?

Naruse has been twisted by so much pain that his definition of Justice had now turned to Punishment. Which, in a way, is also what Naoto is doing. Atoning for his sins, but somehow, it's also a way of punishing himself for his misdeed in the past. After Ep3, I bet he'd realize the gravity of what that one act is goint to do to him. :)

24th-Jul-2008 02:34 pm (UTC)
Every Toma shot is obligatory?! Lolz.

Eh? Really? I. I haven't noticed! XD I've got to rectify that in my next Maou picspam of doom.
But that was not intentional, really. I guess I just found the Naruse character more compelling than the Naoto one. *scratches head* And it doesn't help that I'm an Ohno fangirl.

IN HEELS? No I didn't notice, although I should have. I suppose I've just been, er, a bit caught up with the bag to pay attention to the foot wear. Oh her poor, poor feet!
But who knows, maybe the heels and the bag will prove crucial in apprehending lawbreakers. The bag can be used to whack someone's head with, and those heels! Lethal weapons!

I've been wondering about that butterfly, too. As far as I remember butterflies signify change, particularly the metamorphosis of womanhood, which cannot be applied here unless this series turns into a story focusing on Shiori and her journey as she searches for her eternal link to the cosmos and the Sacred Feminine, and yes, I digress.
In my culture, black butterflies signify death. And with the ominous feeling I got from seeing the opening scene of Episode 1, I can't help but think that Naruse will die. It's the only way to reiterate to viewers that Naruse that yes, may look hot feel justified about all the killing, but no, vengeance is not the way to Justice.

Hm, true. Naruse has been twisted by so much pain as you've so aptly termed it. But with so many years of rage bottled up inside him, I can't imagine how else he could be. And of course, misery acquaints men with strange bedfellows loves company, as the cliche goes.
Obviously, both Naruse and Serizawa, not having learned of the concept of mercy, have not been able to forgive themselves for what happened to Hideo.
But if they did, we might not be watching this drama. That's a sad thought. So. Go on, boys, kill each other!

I find this drama VERY exciting. People have been chest-deep in squealage discourse and the 4th episode isn't out yet!

Funny, though, coz in Mawang (not spoiler-y for you I hope), the female detective was too boyish. Baggy jeans, baggy shirt, totally unstylish hair. XDD She's like Naoto's female version. XDD

The black butterfly...In the Bleach lore, black butterflies were used to somehow 'transport' or 'lead' souls to the afterlife. So...a sign of death? Then I wondered if it was indicative of how Naruse seemed to 'lead' or 'transport' Naoto and his 'cohorts' to their doom. :)

The Sacred Feminine. XDD Was Shiori even searching for any eternal link? And how would it ultimately end with the Sacred Feminine? (the shots of her with the Virgin Mother in the background did not escape me, though)
25th-Jul-2008 08:01 pm (UTC)
The female detective in Maou is Naoto's female version! Hot and stylish! :D

Hey what a coincidence! I was rewatching episodes 1-3 and chatting with my best friend very recently. Upon seeing the black butterfly in the OBB, I asked her what it means in Japanese symbolism [She's a Japanese translator/interpreter, and knowledgeable in Japanese culture]. She said it means change, particularly womanhood, and pointed out that butterflies are universally seen as symbols for the death-rebirth cycle. And she also mentioned that there's this manga she read where it indicated the departure of a soul from the human realm, and that butterflies lead such souls. :)

Was Shiori even searching for any eternal link? Nah, I just thought up the link to the eternal cosmos and Sacred Feminine as an alternative Maou story line emphasizing womanhood because I find it sad that stories on women usually center on the quest for men (Not that there's anything wrong with the quest for men, but there are a lot of women issues/stories out there: quest for women, quest for love [not necessarily for romance], quest for vocation, quest to know oneself. Hell, a woman's story doesn't necessarily have to be a quest, too. There are topics on poverty, politics, the environment, sexuality, reproductive health, and other life issues. And yes, I'm babbling again).

How it would ultimately end? With Shiori leaving Naoto and Ryou, and meeting Sophie Neveu and Robert Langdon, and together they'd revive all the Sacred Feminine iconology in our subconscious, and there'd be a major religious revival! What this kind of plot has to do with Maou? That's open to various interpretations, too. XDD
26th-Jul-2008 01:02 am (UTC)
Ah so it is indeed used in the same way it was used in Bleach lore....about souls departing this life...

Maou story line emphasizing womanhood

haha! Dear, this IS a JAPANESE drama, centering on MEN. I have no high hopes of it actually centering on femininity. But I am thankful that Shiori has her own strength in this story.

I wonder if Robert Langdon would be able to use his symbology smarts to figure out who Amano Makoto is. Tee-hee! does his expertise involve tarot card readings? XDDD And he'd pit his Mickey Mouse watch and Harris tweeds with Naruse's wristwatch-of-doom and dark suits. XDDD
26th-Jul-2008 01:14 am (UTC)
Ah so it is indeed used in the same way it was used in Bleach lore....about souls departing this life...

Indeed. Your concept of Naoto and his cohorts being swept over to the dark side [Darth?] is interesting, too. Thanks for sharing that.

haha! Dear, this IS a JAPANESE drama, centering on MEN. I have no high hopes of it actually centering on femininity. But I am thankful that Shiori has her own strength in this story.

Yeah, I know. I was referring to women's stories in general, how they seem to be centered on men. *sigh*

Maybe Robert would be able to figure out who Amano Makoto is! After he has given a full lecture on religious lore and the parallelisms between the Devil and Amano, that is. And I can already imagine him giving Shiori a lecture on iconology when he sees the Tarot cards! Too bad Langdon doesn't have shoes of doom to combat Naruse with. He can use the ones with the squeaky sounds and lights that babies use, though. And he can put lip gloss, too, for good measure. XDD

Hey, would it be all right with you if I friend you? And would it be too much to ask of you to friend me back? :)
26th-Jul-2008 01:22 am (UTC)
Ahaha.

Langdon would lose to Naruse. Naruse only need to show Langdon in his red room and the poor guy would suffocate from claustrophobia.

Well...unless Dan Brown writes that episode and Langdon still gets out of it. XDDD

Of course. And now you made me wonder why I haven't friended you yet....lolz
26th-Jul-2008 05:27 am (UTC)
True and true.

And when Langdon's all cooped up with Naruse in the red room of doom, he'd probably wonder, why do I always end up with all the crazies and the baddies? XDD

Yay!
25th-Jul-2008 05:29 pm (UTC)
Hmmm: More Questions
1) Well I suppose he had to go study, stalk and earn some reputation and some cash. Plus finding all the players and the 'human tools' to put into play must take time too. ^_~
2) Shiori's power's? I dunno. From the cards she could see the first death, more clear ... maybe because it had happened already.

the second one, was probably more of a prescience, because maybe it hadn't happened yet. They should probably try asking her about the card after the fact, and 'see' what she feels.

from the card with the letter she cuold only see the letter being typed out into the notebook and the black gloves.

but maybe it's to do with which emotion has the most 'feel'. When Naruse smells the flowers he is clearly thinking of his mother. When he's typing the letter, doesn't she say something about the person who held it being 'empty of spirit' or 'dead of feeling'. Probably also why she had a hard time. He is so inc control, she isn't sure what the card says. Also shouldn't they give Sora's bear to her. She might see something there? Ah well ... I have yet to search for ep. 4 as of now ... but I shall continue if you don't mind with the thoughts...

Hmm I saw your friend wonder about the butterfly. Well I think most cultures believe that butterflies signify change and/or correspondingly hold the spirits of those long gone from our side. A manifestation - ghost if you like - of those departed, further extrapolation if you like of those caught between worlds because they haven't found peace yet.

Many Asian cultures also believe that if you get moths/butterflies in your home a visit from someone is iminent.

I can't help you with the wishlist ... but I'd be interested to see your fics of course if you write any. ^_^

Again I agree with you on everything Ohno/Naruse you said ... hee! Although at least you aren't married yet but but I could be Maid of Honour yes???

Ikuta Toma: Yes the MatsuJun school of Acting which involves a lot of running ala Bambino ... he must be so fit. Someone else mentioned the over the top-ness, but his earnest-ness is not so evident as Ban Shougo's. (which is the only point of reference for Jun I have)

Also the running versus the still emphasises how even in the dark Naruse kind of glows and in the light there seems to be a dark aura about Naoto.
But like you say light or dark, evil is evil.

Two sides of a coin that have become dark and clouded because of Hideo's death. You throw it up in the air and it tumbles and spins and falls on one side and yet when you pick it up you find it's one of those cheat coins where both sides are the same. Ne? ^_~ Because my mind obviously is twisted in some way.

And just as an aside Naruse reminds me of one of my favourite understated characters in anime/manga ... Dr Jackal (aka Akabane Kurodou) calculative, precise, professional . Always.

Kobayashi: I saw her in Hinokio. It is very easy to be charmed by her. She does a good job of trying to balance the happy happy coffeshopgirl/librarian/church volunteer with the slightly frightened of her powers psychic persona. Not easy but she's doing quite nicely.

Hmmm haven't entertained the thought of any one in bed yet well except Ohno ...and Nino but then I'm biased. Although there are bound to be some Naruse/Naoto fics soon ... come on people. ^_^

Naoto's boss I said it already ... so much love.

Naoto's dad ... hmmm I don't know if it will be quite so clear cut ... maybe Naruse's plan is not only to kill those he cares for but to take the place of a son of sorts. Clearly Daddy is unhappy with how his sone has turned out and I get the feeling that he looks on aniki as only slightly better but not by much. Consider his admiring tone of voice at the funeral. That the lawyer is representing the killer of his long time friend/business associate doesn't even come into it.

anyhows... it's late here and I have an early morning tomorrow. The searcg for Ep 4 will commence sometime tomorrow I hope hee!

I will continue with more another time I think. Because I am enjoying myself waaaayy too much - I hope you don't mind!

Catch ya later dear.

You have a great weekend now ok!

Love and hugs&hearts and squishy cuddles... oh look Maou icon!!!
26th-Jul-2008 07:04 am (UTC)
1. Suits: My boss has a lot. My brothers have more than five sets each [and they don't use them often]. And I'm thinking since Naruse's wears suits to work, it would be practical to own some. Not just one. What will he wear if he sends it out for laundry?

In my culture, it wouldn't do to wear the same clothes for two consecutive days. It's considered unpresentable and dirty. That's why I'm particular about clothing. Heehee.
I don't get that at all! My guy friends do that! Buy the same clothes with the same style and color. Sometimes they'd relent and buy clothes with the same style but in different colors! *shakes head*
Oh, shoes! I have my share of footwear. Which reminds me, I want to buy a new pair of boots! *_~

2. Yeah, I did mention that Naruse must've had needed time to prepare. Doesn't it make you wonder, how he was able to stay his hand long enough to reach this stage? How he'd been able to study and build a career despite his rage?

3. Fics! You should write some, Zan! ♥ I'll try to find time to write fics, too.

4. You can't be Maid of Honor, you're married already. You can be Matron of Honor, though. XDD

5. in the dark Naruse kind of glows and in the light there seems to be a dark aura about Naoto.
Naruse glows with the color of vengeance. Naoto has a darker aura because he can't forgive himself over Hideo's death. I think.

6. Oh yes, you like GetBackers, too, huh? I ♥ the GetBackers! And yes, yes, Naruse reminds me of the Jackal. They're both creepy, too. And we clearly can't tell if we should believe them or not. But Naruse and Naoto seem like the two sides of Amano Ginji, with Naruse as Raitei and Naoto as Ginji. Speaking of Jackal, he's one of my favorites, too. Although of all of them, my most favorite is Ban. :) I'm also a big fan of the KakeiXKazuki pairing!

7. I'd really like to see Naruse/Anyone and Everyone fics! ♥ Have you noticed that discussion boards are more tolerant with het pairings than people in LJ are. Which is weird because most people in LJ are members of discussion boards, too.

8. On Serizawa daddy, that's true. He seems to be categorizing people into useful/useless to him. And maybe the reason why he's not running after Naoto to help in the business is because Noriyoshi's around, anyway. But I'd really want to believe he loves his son. He just can't help being brutally sincere about his opinions, he's a practical person, after all.

Episode 4!

Oh, you have more to say, eh? No I don't mind. I love it! ♥

I shall be waiting, then. *lights cigarette* *heh, kidding, I don't smoke anymore!*

You have a wonderful weekend, my MADness partner!
31st-Jul-2008 02:56 pm (UTC)
Zan pointed me here, and I hope you don't mind if I jump in for some Maou discussion ^^"

Re: Shiori's powers . . . I love the idea that Naruse is actually impressing them with his own deliberately planted impressions . . . which then leads us to the whole "he has no heart/feelings/spirit" quote--if these impressions were planted . . . why that? It's not actually true, as the show keeps showing . . .

I am so happy with your discussion of Naruse as Faustian tempter, btw--he actually isn't a murderer, he as far as I can tell has broken no laws--what he does do is demonstrate the wanton shortcomings of the law to provide adequate "justice" a term he shows is highly subjective.

And what the hell could they actually charge him with, anyway? He offered people choices--staged choices sure, but none of them is required to act this way. And then Naoto gets to see how that feels.

Though I thought in light of this, Naruse's convulsive swallowing and clearly shaken response to Sora's mother's bitterness and grief/shame/ guilt made perfect sense in terms of how he might react to the idea that being exonerated by the law doesn't necessarily mean one does not suffer after one commits a crime--if this is so, how just is his punishment of Naoto?

On the other hand, until ep 4, how much actual remorse have we seen out of Naoto? Most of it is pretty self-centered--at least until 4.

In terms of Naruse's fate--I think he's also setting himself up--he wants to be caught, and that's why his pseudonym is the same as his real name . . . only in anagram form (amano makoto/ manaka tomoo)--He wants to be caught, he wants Serizawa to know why, and he wants Serizawa to join him in the trap of frustrated justice. At least that's how I read it, especially after his creepy reading of the children's story--I don't know what he resented his little brother for but I suppose we'll find out . . . Anyway, I sort of felt there was a self-destructive impulse from the beginning when the first one he kills is the lawyer who structurally occupies the same position as himself--and who he chooses to echo each time he exonerates one of the killers. . .

am I even making sense? It's much clearer in my head, but I'm sort of living in hectic land right now, and all my thoughts from all 4 episodes are blurring.

also: lipgloss--totally a diversionary tactic so that people don't catch the double-entendres rampant throughout. That makes it so much more fun to watch again ^^

re: Naruse/Naoto. YES PLZ. The eyesex is already about killing me. I have only seen one fic so far that has done it, but . . . I haven't been looking too hard-I have to finish packing so I can move in 4 days >_<

/babble the second ^^"
1st-Aug-2008 12:28 am (UTC) - stupid lj is telling me my reply is too long 1
Hi again! :) Again, I don't mind. In fact, I welcome people to come over and discuss Maou! But since I don't know a lot of people on lj, and work has been treating me unkindly, I can't find anyone to flail with. :(

It makes me so happy, too, being an Ohno fangirl, how his first drama is something that seduces me to think, not just some romantic comedy which I can laugh and giggle at [which is not bad, but this is better]!

I've noticed that my thoughts on Maou, specifically on Naruse, are changing as I see new episodes and think more about its story. I've decided not to rewrite the entry above though, to trace the "evolution" of my views. ^^

Naruse deliberately planting his own impressions and sending the Tarot cards may be seen as his way of tormenting Naoto, but can also be interpreted as him wanting to be caught. I love it, even in this, Naruse's suffering [Please stop me, I'm evil, help!/Writhe in pain and guilt, Naoto! Nyaha!] can be seen! The smart boy knows justice=/=vengeance, but as a loving son and brother, he feels justified, somehow. I love tormented fallen angels/manipulative, charming devils!

On Naruse having no heart/feelings/spirit, as I've told [info]kegom, if this were true, he wouldn't feel the need for vengeance anymore. If he had no heart, he wouldn't feel the loss of his family [and the measure of love is loss, after all], and that was what drove him to stage all this in the first place.

I don't see Naruse as a murderer, either. In his demonstration of "the wanton shortcomings of the law to provide adequate justice" as you've so nicely put it, isn't it amusing how he has supported his "the truth cannot be distorted" line, and yet has still managed to get around it? He didn't distort the truth, but he didn't say there's just one, either (I think it was in Evangelion where it was stated that there are many ways an individual is perceived and they are all true [the different truths], which reminds me of Rashomon/Akutagawa's In a Grove). Again, as I see it, for Naruse, Justice is the truth that wins.

I really want a Doctor Faustus quote! "If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and there is not truth in us." These lines seem applicable to Naruse's quest for vengeance [he is convinced that Naoto has been leading a life without remorse, a negation of Naoto's sin. This is probably why Naruse looked so smug and justified in the reeenactment scene: he saw Naoto acknowledge the truth of his crime].

Good point. In a complementary view, I see this as: Shintani's truth [I'm a murderer] made Naruse uncomfortable. Apparently, she could not accept the truth that the law stated. That he could not distort her truth, and placate her with the judgment of the law--something he had not foreseen--made him uncertain because, he also disagreed with that self-defense argument when Hideo died [like Shintani on Yosuke's death]. On another note, how can Naoto be given absolution when he has not yet asked for forgiveness?

Serizawa Naoto is still self-centered to me. His remorse in Episode 4 reeks of arrogance. He doesn't say, "Forgive me, God" or "I'm sorry, Hideo", he was just hoping God will forgive him. It reeks of arrogance. And it makes me think of Faustus again, how Faustus was so deliberately blind to the possibility of salvation. And like Faustus, Naoto has an ignorance he shows no sign of rectifying.

Anagrams! I love anagrams! I laughed when the realization hit me, like I laughed with the whole Rain and Truth angle!

The tunnel [I almost got distracted with the female undertones of this symbol]: there's a Stephen King story like this--two boys went out one night and one of them got in the tunnel, and the other one was left waiting for him forever and he spent his life drowning in guilt because before that they had a fight and he wanted his brother to disappear; he felt that the fates have granted his wish, that he has caused his brother's disappearance. Naruse's story probably runs along the same lines, maybe he was supposed to meet his brother, maybe he feels that if he did something which he did not do his brother would still be alive, which is probably why he is trying to make him live through him. I wonder though, if his take on the story reflects a past resentment for his brother or his bestfriend. Or if it's just him saying why, even knowing that his judgment of Naoto is unjust, he won't save Naoto.

Anyway, I sort of felt there was a self-destructive impulse from the beginning when the first one he kills is the lawyer who structurally occupies the same position as himself--and who he chooses to echo each time he exonerates one of the killers. . .

I like that, I like that a lot! Naruse's self-destructive impulse, as you've called it, is something I noticed in the first episode because of the seeming contradiction in his purpose in sending the Tarot cards. I also read Kumada's death as Naruse's way of "announcing" his first step in replacing the truth of Naoto's "innocence".

Oh yes, you're making perfect sense. And I understand that feeling too, how the things that we think are so clear in our heads become quite muddled when we say them or write them down.

Yeah, I've seen just one fic, too. I've been itching to write a Maou fic but I've been held immobile by work! *cries*

I hope all goes well with your packing and moving!

Looking forward to discussing more of Maou with you!

Ah, I finally got back to my computer! \o/ and akusubs actually got the subs out before I leave and lose my internet \o/

Would you mind if I friended you? I'm really enjoying our conversation ^_^"

I have been also thinking I should read me some Goethe, lately. Purely for work ^^" All I have under me is Marlowe, and it's been a good long while . . .

Though I was thinking about what you said about Doctor Faustus and his absolute refusal to consider that God might forgive him--which is itself a form of arrogance and pride, right? "Hey! I sinned way too much to ever be forgiven! So there!" Because it's not really despair, which is a variety of sloth--it's pride all the way with Faustus (well and Greed or avarice, I suppose, and then lust. Oh hell. Whatever-- Pride is the gateway sin, at least in medieval English texts. It just leads to all of the others ^^").

Anyway, that was a huge digression--I agree that Serizawa is acting in a really self-centered, arrogant way, even in his narcissistic angst (Most angst is narcissistic, I guess), but then I was thinking about how that reflects of Naruse and his whole "It can't be stopped now/catch me!" relationship with Serizawa. There is a sort of narcissistic edge to his"my justice is just one of many, but mine will triumph, dammit!" way of dealing with Serizawa, and there is also the faux passivity of "I can't stop now; it's too late for that" attitude, which is a claim for helplessness which is really a willful rejection of changing his path.

I have a bit more sympathy for Serizawa after episodes 4 and 5 (bless speedy subbers!), but I still have fantasies of outtakes where Naruse smacks Serizawa about the head and shoulders, saying "Quit your bitching! Not everything is always about you, princess! And you have no idea how to properly deploy your lipgloss!"

I'm very willing to be convinced by "Truth" as god, but Naruse's willingness to believe that there are many truths (and after all, his truth, among equal truths is just more equal than the others^_~), allows him to finesse the whole manipulation of truth he employs in his own activities-- He can claim to be protecting or revealing truths through the use of untruths --and truths that only make sense in light of his own knowledge--which as a part of the audience who knows at least who the murderer is, participate in.

I've been thinking about how the show invites sympathy with Naruse (up to a point) precisely because we share knowledge with him--though we also share his ignorance in terms of what Serizawa felt as a child-- come to think of i, that's also how we are engaged in terms of sympathies with Serizawa--we know bits that Naruse doesn't . . . and then the question is whether Naruse, as these truths are revealed to him, will also allow sympathy to operate. I kid of feel like he will claim not to be affected, at least in action, but that he will allow himself to self-destruct passively, much like Faustus . . . back to the refusal of grace . . .

ok, now I've managed to babble in a circle . . .

*rolls eyes at self*

Episode 5!!! :DDDD Haven't seen it yet, though. And I haven't even spazzflailed about the 4th episode! I should just ditch work and fangirl full time! XD

I was going to ask you that myself! Friends, then! ^_^

Haven't read Goethe, really. I should, it's in my list, too; if there's anything this drama has taught me, it's not to start reading books in list of books to read! I still have an awful lot of books to read, too. *sniff* So many books so little time... You teach Marlowe? I love Marlowe. *melts* And it's been a while since I've read Marlowe. I'll stop now or I'll be babbling like a mad thing until heaven knows when. Heehee.

Doctor Faustus' quest for the greatest form of knowledge was borne of pride. It's such a genius twist and so fitting, too, for him to fall for this same sin. Naruse is also guilty of Pride--has been guilty of it the moment he judged Naoto and his friends--the very same sin that caused Lucifer to fall. No wonder pride is considered the deadliest of the seven sins.

"Quit your bitching! Not everything is always about you, princess! And you have no idea how to properly deploy your lipgloss!"

*cracks up*

Naoto's full of himself. His "pain" is so selfish, too. I've been wanting to shake him for sometime now and say, "The world does not revolve around you, Mulder," as Scully did to her partner.

Naruse's willingness to believe that there are many truths (and after all, his truth, among equal truths is just more equal than the others^_~), allows him to finesse the whole manipulation of truth he employs in his own activities-- He can claim to be protecting or revealing truths through the use of untruths --and truths that only make sense in light of his own knowledge--which as a part of the audience who knows at least who the murderer is, participate in.

ILU. ♥

Don't you think that that just lends more strength to the Devil/ Naruse parallelism? As Faust's devil, Naruse is employing a series of untruths in service of his personal god. And Naruse as Lucifer, isn't he still trying to upstage his god here, by replacing the Truth with his many truths?

I've mentioned in the entry above that I think both of them are self-centered bastards. And as you've been pointing out how Naruse is guilty of the same things that Naoto is, I need to examine why I sympathize with Naruse more [I suspect, this has a lot to do with how Naoto has dealt with the entire affair so far--I really want to kick him and say, this is not just about you. *eyeroll*]

As to why Naruse might not sympathize with Naoto, if humility and mercy were possible in this story, then Naruse will forgive Naoto, Naoto will forgive himself and they will move in together, have lots of sex, get a dog and read the papers in bed on Sundays, and we'd all be happy on and become friends and maybe we'd get to see some porn. But, and this is my opinion, Naruse's actions are not being done for the salvation of the self or to right a wrong. I suppose it's his way of coping with his own inadequacy. There's probably something that happened that has rendered him unable to forgive. It may be one of the many things he's been trying to say with that tunnel story: he's been having his own doubts about his revenge, but he won't save Naoto because he wants Naoto to disappear, and the reason why he can't forgive Naoto is that, he feels guilty of his own brother's death. And that is why he's confused with the whole affair.

Yeah.

YES! especially after that bar scene in ep 5--Domestic Naruse/Naoto porn!

And I totally agree with your assessment of Naruse's sense of inadequacy--I think he may believe that he is working for justice/fairness/truth etc., but the show is ultimately not going to endorse that line or they wouldn't be constantly framing the episodes with the Luucifer narrative./ It would be kind of awesome if they really went with it and didn't make it a Freudian cry for help, but . . . that's entertaining in its own way . . .

Also, the big red eye. wtf??

I have currently made it 900 miles . . . yet will not get to the new place until Sunday probably . . . must find wireless >_<

Wow you have a lot of insightful comments here. Are you a religion major? o.O

Yeah, I noticed the lipgloss thing too. Kinda makes his lips look sweaty.

As for Shiori's powers... I don't know how they work, but by now you've probably watched the entire series... How come the end is so abrupt with her touching the harmonica? There's also a scene in the series where Naruse is reading to Sora and he says that he and Shiori are both magic users. could be a clue? I wondered if Naruse really had a special ability like Shiori, but it's never explicitly stated. But Shiori also said that the sender of the tarot cards was purposely implanting these images, making Naoto and Shiori see what he wanted them to see. Could that be a power in itself?

This reply is very, um, late but...

Ahahaha! Religion major, indeed! No, I just happen to be someone who tends to overthink things. Haha!

I had been meaning to do a full review of this series but work got in the way and the series ended. I still feel like writing one but I might be the only one interested in that so...

Thanks for dropping by!
